I actually have only seen TOS and a few episodes of TNG, I'm ashamed to say, but I'm working my way through now, but I'm having a lot of fun even with the "boring" aspects like scanning stuff with the tricorder. I think it also is a great sci fi story in general, so sci fi fans could like it if they don't mind technobabble. I have no idea if non-fans will really like the game, but I think even the most tangential of fans (like people who only watched TNG once but still liked it) would enjoy it. There's also a lot of philosophical questions surrounding the main antagonists, but I can't really go into them without spoilers and I haven't really finished the game so idk how it'll all play out.īut aside from that, it is so very, very star trek. His questions and moral quandries are more personal in a lot of ways, and really makes me ask "at what point do we give up hope?" Or "when do we decide its no longer worth trying to save someone?" Or "at what point does survival/victory take precedence over principles?" Then Petty Officer Diaz really grows as a person, going from the wise-cracking, kinda funny engineering guy to a capable leader that even Major Arminta shows deference to. And they're hard questions and I can understand both sides of the issue(unlike a lot of telltale games where the moral quandries are pretty much "selfish vs selfless" or something). Now I'm on the question of the safety of the crew or starfleet ideals. However, as things ramped up, she had to choose between loyalty to starfleet and loyalty to her captain. And the game allowed for very good and naturalįor example, my first (and current) playthrough, Jara really started out respecting the captain and wanting to follow the chain of command properly, as well as being ambitious enough that she wanted to stay on the captains good side. The story is great, and I love how we've got the Kobliad First Officer as one protagonist and an enlisted petty officer engineer as the other protagonist. But they're really minor, and will hopefully get fixed soon. Nothing that makes me say "this is a terrible game" but stuff like audio bugs where the first half of a sentence will repeat and the rest won't play before the next sentence. I'd love to see more Star Trek from this creative team. The cameos from pre-existing characters didn't feel forced either, they didn't detract at all from the story being told. They took some inspiration from TNG's "The Last Outpost" (1x5) and a plot point from DS9's "The Passenger" (1x9). What's interesting to me is that the episodes they pulled from aren't very good. It feels like the player's choices have an effect on the story as well, particularly on how the other characters react to the player characters. It brings back some elements from past episodes while telling it's own original, compelling story. So you get both a view from the bridge and from the lower decks. They did something interesting with the storytelling, where the player switches almost seamlessly between the ship's first officer and an engineering non-commissioned officer. It's not without some issues, but it has excellent characters, pacing, plot, and feels like Star Trek to me. It's probably a good time even if you're not. I just finished the game, and I cannot recommend it highly enough if you're a Star Trek fan.
